What is Coaching?

The Full Story

What is a Coach?

Coaching is more about the client than it is about the coach. Of course, a skilled coach brings the requisite experience, education, training, and most importantly, the creative wisdom required to create a space where genuine transformation can take root and blossom. So what does the coaching experience actually look like?

In business terms, the question might be framed as, what is the "value proposition" offered by an effective coach? But at its heart, coaching offers something far more personal than a business transaction. It offers you the opportunity to open your book of life to see, perhaps for the first time, the actual story you have been living by. The most important story in the world is the one we tell ourselves. Yet very few people have ever taken an intentional, on-purpose journey into that story. Most of us don't consciously understand what our story is telling us about who we are, or how we see ourselves in relation to the rest of the world.

What's more, very few people understand the foundations of their story, where it came from, or who was instrumental in shaping the storyline that quietly drives their choices and decisions every day. Who wrote the chapters of this story? What environments, events, and experiences, including painful ones, shaped the person you became?

Coaching, through thoughtful and creatively generative questions, gently opens the covers of your life story and invites you to look at it from a place of genuine authenticity. Your coach creates a safe, confidential, and nonjudgmental space. A space where you can, perhaps for the first time, learn to be truly honest with yourself. Here you can discover the story that has been driving your choices, your decisions, and the directions your life has taken. It is a discovery process that brings clarity to the events, the people, and the environments that created your story and ultimately, the person you have become.

This journey of personal discovery offers two primary and powerful takeaways.

First, understanding the story you have been living opens a window to understanding the role it played in the outcomes of the decisions and choices you have made, both the ones you're proud of and the ones you'd do differently. And here is where something beautiful happens: this is not a process of shame. Quite the opposite. Guilt and shame are gently replaced with ownership and personal responsibility. Not a burden, but a gift. Because ownership means you have agency, you have the power to rewrite what comes next. Understanding why you developed certain patterns does not excuse harmful behavior or eliminate accountability. It gives you the awareness needed to make more conscious choices going forward.

Second, the coaching process shines a light on the adaptations you have made in life. The ways you learned to survive and navigate your world. What may surprise you is how many of those adaptations have quietly become personal strengths and superpowers. When channeled with intention and purpose, these are the very qualities that can propel you toward the success you deserve. The story behind these adaptations simply needs to be reframed in a way that honors the resilience it took to develop them.

So, what does this all amount to?

A productive coaching relationship yields a newly discovered confidence. A confidence grounded in a deep understanding of the story behind your life choices. It opens the door to genuine acceptance of the events and experiences that shaped you, including the painful and difficult ones. This is not tolerance of what happened, nor approval of anyone who may have harmed you. It is the recognition that much of what happened to you was outside of your control and the liberating realization that you now have the power to reframe that story so it works for you, not against you. Strengths are so often forged under adversity. You can absolutely capitalize on those strengths by reframing how they show up in your story going forward.

What tangible takeaways should you expect from an effective coaching relationship?

·       The discovery of, and commitment to, your genuine personal values,

·       A renewed confidence gained from a rebuilt emotional foundation, grounded in your reframed personal story,

·       A clear understanding of how your survival skills and adaptations can and do provide real personal strengths and superpowers that can be channeled toward meaningful success, and

·       A replacement of guilt and shame with discovery, authenticity, understanding, and commitment.

Unpacking and reframing your life story takes courage. Learning to be authentic with yourself takes honesty and determination. But you don't have to do it alone and that is precisely the point. The rewards of this work are genuinely life-changing.

A skilled coach can help you live at your highest potential, much the way a great coach helps an athlete perform at their very best. When selecting a coach, it is essential that you feel they are a strong match for your personality, that they understand and actively support the goals you have set for the coaching process, and that they are genuinely committed to your interests and wellbeing. Effective coaching is a trusted, committed team effort.

Through that effort, you can begin to experience the potential that already lives within you. It has always been there. You simply need to rewrite your story to reflect it.
